have developed as a breed
both in shape and size etc.
They now show very well
and stand with the best of
the foreign breeds Charolais,
Simmy’s etc. So five years
ago he bought some Lincolns
and Chris says he has had
nothing that has converted
as well on grass - going from
41KG to 550KG in 10 months,
that is 1.8kg a day! He also
finds that they are very good
natured beasts. Chris reckons
that anyone thinking of going
into a native breed would do
well to seriously consider the
Lincoln Red. They are great
for standing out in winter, he
says, if your grass will stand
it.
They are also a delight to
break in and get on a halter.
With that in mind - and Chris’s
developing passion for
Lincoln’s - it is not surprising
that his prize Lincoln Foulness
Ultra won Overall Natural and
Reserve champion at Lincoln
Show, which resulted in him
selling Ultra for an undisclosed
fee to Rob Mower (Premier)
Herd in Lincolnshire.
In 26 years of raising cattle
Chris now reckons Lincoln’s are
the best.
Every farmer always has
a quirky story somewhere
and Chris is no different. As a
passionate farmer and showman
he also has two splendid Shires
which he regularly shows and
indeed one year he won with
a Bull and a horse at the same
Driffield Show! “Mind You,” Chris
admitted, “I’ve never worked
so hard in my life keeping a
shire horse and a bull in show
condition. I was sweating
buckets! You try getting a bull
and a horse in the same trailer!”
And to top it all, the bull
only went and ate the horse’s
mane!
