wasn’t ready - so he bedded
down with the cows that night
covering himself with straw
to keep warm, only to wake
freezing cold in the morning to
find the cows had eaten all the
straw!
Andrew’s parents, Brian and
Lorraine managed the farm in
the 80s with 40 sucklers, 500
ewes and 2,000 pigs - and if
that wasn’t enough they also
managed the Longley Farm
with arable crops, a dairy herd
and a further 10,000 or more
pigs.
As Andrew took over the
running of the farm he became
more and more disappointed
with the low livestock prices,
so to boost income and
returns, he and Lisa started
what is now the flourishing
Coddy’s Farm Shop. Produce
here is entirely supplied from
their herds of Aberdeen Angus
and Dexter beef, as well as
their Llyen sheep and the pigs

they rear on a B and B basis.
They also produce whole crop
cereal for Forage.
All the butchering is done on
site and they produce all their
own sausages, bacon and
burgers. Customers can now
order direct from their website
or purchase from the farmers’
markets they attend: Holmfirth
every Thursday and Saturday,
Cleckheaton and Littleborough
monthly Farmers’ Markets. The
stalls are manned by Andrew
and Brian, who love to chat
about how they farm.
