The thing about Cheviots, Texels and Suffolks is that if some are not fit for breeding they can still command a good price at market. “We buy Cheviots predominantly from Lockerbie and run a pedigree flock of 200. We have 150 Texels and 50 Suffolks. We sell at markets such as Darlington, Longtown, Kendal, Lockerbie, Gisburn and Clitheroe so I do know which have the best canteens!” he laughed. Keith’s suckler herd includes a few Belgian Blue pures but the rest are all commercial stock. He has two Belgian Blue bulls and two Limousin bulls and suckler calves are sold through Darlington market. He goes for spring calving and selling in the autumn. Keith is the fifth generation to farm up at Nuncote Nook Farm. He and Elaine, who is originally from Darley in Nidderdale, have five offspring – Ben, Tommy, Annie, Jack and Mary. Tommy is at Askham Bryan College studying agriculture and has a few Oxford pigs on the farm. Ben is at Scarborough studying web design. The others are all still at school. Like many farming families, they have diversified. Elaine runs a very well-attended tea-room for walkers making their way on the Coast to Coast Walk.
