NUNCOTE NOOK FARM really does have a touch of splendour about it – and there is another boxful still waiting to be displayed! “That’s last season’s batch and the previous two years. The reason why we put them up is probably the same as one or two others. We sell an awful lot of sheep privately from home. If they come inside, they soon get the idea that we have something halfway decent here. That’s why we started showing, as a shop window. It’s our marketing tool. “We show all three breeds and three or four years ‘Showing is our shop window, our marketing tool’ ago we had all three breed champions at Eggleston Show. We never buy sheep to show, we only take our own home bred stock.” Westmorland Show is a particular favourite with Keith who has won there no less than nine times in the past 11 years. Successes were also achieved at the Great Yorkshire Show and Nidderdale Show as well as many others. Masham Sheep Fair at the end of the season is another for which Keith has a soft spot. “It has that something different about Bank Top Mart, Clifton Road, Darlington, Co Durham DL1 5DU Tel: 01325 464529 Fax: 01325 384282 www.dfam.co.uk AUCTIONEER, LIVESTOCK AGENTS AND VALUERS We wish Keith stones and all the team continued success -----------Weekly Sale of Cast Cows, Store Cattle & Store Sheep Every Monday Weekly Sales of Store Cattle and Sheep ------------Agricultural, Tax and Compensation Claim Valuations Undertaken -----------Details Telephone: 01325 464529 Andrew J Armstrong (Market Manager/Head Auctioneer): Emma Coupland (Auctioneer): Tracey Gilhespy (Field Officer): Stephen Dodsworth (Field Officer): it. We didn’t get to it for its first couple of years but now we would never miss it. The amount of work that the organisers do in putting it together and the amount of additional trade it brings to the town are tremendous. The atmosphere is phenomenal and competition is strong throughout all the breeds. It’s really great that Masham has Yorkshire’s biggest market square and it is an amazing sight to see it completely packed for the Fair.” Attention to detail is another one of Keith’s mottos. He spends masses of time making sure his show team look totally spick and span when they enter the ring. “The amount of work that goes into getting a sheep ready doesn’t start a day or two before a show. In some cases it can be a whole year of preparation. It was just immediately the way it looked,” he explained. “The night before the shows I make a point of washing their backsides, because sadly, they can’t use toilet paper! The morning of the show I wash them, clean and wipe their faces before loading them up. You don’t just walk them out of a field, into a trailer and into the ring, not unless you are preparing to fail.” Keith took over from his uncle when he retired in 1991 and changed the farming emphasis.
