» » ROBERT CAMPBELL WAS
not involved in farming until
his father took on two small
farms in Harwood Dale near
Scarborough in the 1950s.
Farming had skipped a
generation or two but Robert’s
career has been wholly
agriculture since his teens and
he’s just completed his 50th
harvest at Oneholmes Farm in
Seamer near Stokesley.
‘We are what’s called the
Potato Campbells as we came
over from Ireland originally and
settled in Scotland. My great-
grandfather diversified out of
agriculture and we gradually
moved south to Newcastle,
Darlington and then North
Yorkshire.
‘For some reason or other
this farming gene kicked in -
even though I hadn’t grown
up on a farm. I was born in a
house next to the 17th green at
Ganton Golf Club. I used to go
up to my father’s farms during
the school holidays and by the
time I was 15-16 I would stay
with the farm manager for two
or three weeks. After studying
for my Honours degree in
agriculture at Cambridge, and
having worked on farms in
Norfolk and at West Heslerton,
I married Jane and bought
186 acres here. The farm had
previously been run by a real
gentleman called Walter Hall
who was very helpful to me and
he had employed Cliff Garbutt
who stayed with me until he
retired - sadly Walter and Cliff
are no longer with us.’
Today’s Campbell farming
enterprise includes what is now
800 acres at Oneholmes and
2000 acres in Scotland.
‘My father had a hankering
to own land in Scotland and
bought half of what we now
own with a tenant. He bought
it in the 60s and added to it in
