the 70s when the tenant retired and my father asked me to take it on. Oneholmes and the land in Scotland, is now owned by our son, James who works up there too.’
Wheat, barley, oilseed rape and grass is grown at Oneholmes where there is also a flock of 300 breeding ewes and around 50 suckler cows. Wheat varieties this year were Scout, Leeds and Gator; winter barley varieties were Glacier, Tower and Volume. Everything is grown for feed. The sheep are Grey Faces – Scottish Blackface X Blue Faced Leicester – with a few Texels for tup production. The farm in Scotland is all grass with a flock of 1500 mostly Grey Faces, but we are experimenting with the New Zealand Romney breed.
‘ The suckler herd we have at Oneholmes started with Salers. I went into the breed because its maternal prowess was the best we could find at the time. We’ re now using Angus X and Hereford X Salers
