When the initial demolition was completed, Ruth and John had a pile of 3000 tons of hardcore/ rubble. They started at 4.30 am in the morning, Ruth driving the Loadall and John pulling the buildings down. The new shop was built virtually from scratch with only minimal help from outside contractors. The programme of works initially was for the shop and to get it open as quick as possible, but incredibly they have rebuilt the entire farm. Every building and barn has been rebuilt or refurbished, including the 17th century farmhouse. The whole property has been future-proofed apart from the need for routine maintenance now. It is the neatest fully working farm and farm- shop I have ever seen, all kept in tip-top condition. So, after the unbelievably back-breaking hard slog to create the new shop it opened in 2006. John and Ruth had one day off in that year or so, Christmas Day! Both John and Ruth were extremely apprehensive as they were doing something they had never done before and starting with not one customer. The further plunge taken was that Katy and Rachael both came back to the farm when the shop was ready to open, John and Ruth needn’t have worried.
