The decision was made prior to 2000 to
build up the Limousin herd. The Family have
Rachael to thank for the start of today’s
thriving Limousin herd. She had had a calf
of her own and had always wanted to do
more, so following her Grandfathers death
(who was himself a champion breeder
of Shire Horses) she bought herself a
Limousin. It was an instant hit with Rachael
and the family so they all got involved and
started to build the herd by breeding them
with the cows and buying more in from
auction all prior to making the complete
change. On the final day, Ruth took the last
of the cows to auction and brought back
new calves. This was one of the toughest
times the family has faced. Money was
incredibly tight, so for the first 6 months
John went back to driving a truck.
John and Ruth worked hard on building
up the herd, buying less and less as the
years went by, their goal being a full pedi-
gree, high health status herd. This is where
the herd is today with an average head of
110. More of this fine herd later.
They do say that if you are going to make
the best of a new idea get in there first. John
and Ruth had always done retailing with
the milk, latterly wholesale and enjoyed it,
so they decided to open up a farm shop,
as back then in 2004/5 there were very
few about. Thus began the toughest and
mightiest project the Dean family have
undertaken. The herd was ramped up in
readiness to supply the new shop when it
was completed.
