Old Hall Farm in front of Kathy’ s uncle Ken on the plough marking the fairways as they went. Once ploughed, harrowed and tilled the fairways were seeded, bunkers constructed and for the meantime the rough was left as stubble. The greens were marked and turfed the following July and by Spring the following year they had a 9-hole course! Clearly, an integral part of any golf course is the vegetation and foliage. So with that in mind they planted a staggering 12,000 trees. As I drove the course with Kathy you would not believe that this was once open farm land. The fairways are lush, carpet-like greens flanked by varying levels of well-developed landscape planting( which I am sure have claimed many a ball from golfers who can’ t hit a reasonable line!)
In 1995 came another important milestone as they expanded to a full 18-hole course and also appointed John Waite to the team as Head Greenkeeper. John, along with his green keepers, keep the course in impeccable condition. John not only turns his hand to all aspects of course maintenance and construction – bridges, bunkers, tee expansion and refurbishment- but also looks after the myriad of equipment needed day to day.
