A Yorkshire couple are celebrating after their January 2014 born home bred British Blonde heifer ‘Katem Jewel’, won her class before going on to take Junior Champion, Female Champion and overall Breed Honours. Mr Mutch, British Blonde Judge commented “She’s a near perfect heifer”. »»Kate and Andrew McNeil’s ‘Katem Jewel’ is from a quiet, well-natured Dam ‘Fern’ who this year calved a Bull that is making great progress at six months. Kate, a passionate competitor in the show ring from childhood, said: “To win the GYS with our own animal means so ‘a passionate competitor in the show ring from childhood’ much to us and is a great reward for our efforts.” Their achievements are all the more remarkable because in 2010, Kate was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, symptoms of which include chronic, widespread pain and a heightened, painful response to pressure, fatigue, sleep disturbance and joint stiffness. At the time she was working in the NHS but decided to fight her illness and after 20 years, left to follow her dream of cattle breeding. Andrew had two companies but has since closed one so that he and Kate can work together in Katem Cattle.
