I’ve never shown cattle myself although my brother Frank is well-known for showing heavy horses. I did show some bantams when I was nine years old but I didn’t do any good because I didn’t have the right sort!” he recalled. “I remember walking to the showground with them in a box. When I got there they were all fancy-legged things and mine were just farmyard bantams! “Barnby Show is a local produce show run by the Barnby Farm Produce Society and in 1974 I started gathering up the subscriptions. I still do it now. That first year I gathered up exactly one pound! Now it’s usually between £180-£200. Lythe Show has just been resurrected in recent years and I’m involved with that, too. At present I’m particularly proud of our local shop in Lythe. It was closed for four months but has been re-opened as a community-run tea shop and shop. I want to preserve things for the next generations. I may not go to church much but I still want it to be there.” It is very clear that, despite all the ups and down of life, Ron retains his friendly, positive outlook and – with a little help from his family and friends – he is still smiling.
