CATTLE Beef prices unlikely to recover until late 2014 Beef prices are unlikely to recover until later in 2014, according to the latest Eblex outlook. UK supplies of beef and veal remain higher than in 2013 but should tighten up later this year and into the next, the quarterly report said. The levy board slightly raised its forecast beef production for 2014 to ‘875,000t - 6,000t higher’ 875,000t – 6,000t higher than in the April outlook. But production in 2015 is forecast to be two percent down on the year as lower numbers prevail over heavier carcass weights. In the wake of the UK’s beef pricing crisis, Waitrose has raised its “price floor” for British beef. The supermarket set a minimum price it would pay British farmers for their beef at £3.40 per kilo until September 2014. However, this has now been raised to £3.45 per kilo until 1 October 2014. In addition to this price rise, Waitrose will also raise the price paid for standard British cattle, used for the Essential Waitrose range, by 0.02p per kilo. JOKE OF THE MONTH A couple drove several miles down a country road, not saying a word. An early discussion had lead to an argument and neither wanted to conced their position. As they passed a barnyard of mules and pigs, the wife sarcastically asked, “Relatives of yours?” “Yep,” the husband replied, “In-laws.” To read more, visit www.farmers-mart.co.uk Green’s Farm Supplies have now printed a little book of jokes and all monies raised from its sale will be going to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance charity.
