D & J STEAD 45
• APR/MAY 2020
The D & J Stead team were out in force
during March when I saw them all out
in the fields near Murton, drilling up as
many crops as they could.
‘The rains have affected our drilling
work tremendously,’ says Duncan. ‘All
our work has backed up tremendously,
but we’re getting caught up as quickly
as we can. we’ve drilled into May before
and the yields were very good, so it’s not
the end of the world.’
Wishing Duncan Stead continued success.

‘Everyone is predicting that wheat is
going to be worth a lot this year because
of the amount that was either lost or
not able to be drilled and I think that will
probably be the case. There may be an
abundance of spring barley and beans
instead. We are putting in spring beans
because we want an entry for a first
wheat after them.’
Another side to the D & J Stead busi-
ness is blade hedge cutting. ‘We use a
circular saw blade on the front of a 360
track digger for overgrown, out of control
hedges.’
‘We use two Ktwo muckspreaders both
the new 16 tonne Evo machines that work
very well for us and provide a very fine,
wide spreading pattern.’
The D & J Stead team includes Duncan
and Nick on the machines, Jane on
the accounts and another three team
members.
