been to Stirling for the Perth Bull Sales and
when he was ill Criag trained up his heifer
and two bulls he wanted to take. He got
champion heifer and his two bulls were
second and third in their class. He was over
the moon. Criag took over from David as
chairman of the North East Club.’
‘Since we started we’ve had National
Breed champion and Great Yorkshire Show
champion with Midhope Brightlight in 2016.
She was also Interbreed Champion twice at
Driffield Show and once at Lincolnshire Show.
Her first calf was a bull and took champion
at Carlisle in 2015,’ says Craig. ‘We did well
at Lincolnshire Show last year with two of
her daughters achieving first places in their
classes and one going on to take the female
championship, overall champion and reserve
in the interbreed competition. We now show
at the Lincolnshire, the Great Yorkshire and
Driffield every year as well as the breed sales
and shows at Newark and Carlisle. Simmen-
tals are very much on the rise and this year

there were more Simmentals sold at Stirling
than any other breed. They tick all the boxes
for the commercial man with plenty of milk to
grow calves and plenty of growth.’
‘Our best prices so far include 7500 guineas
for our bull Midhope Apache sold at Stirling
in 2010 and for our best female price of 5500
guineas for Midhope Everlight who won the
Leading Ladies Championship at Carlisle. Our
senior stock bull now is Delfur Chas.’
Midhope Hall Farm currently runs to al-
most 260 acres of which the Hollingsworths
own 230 with the rest rented from Yorkshire
Water at Langsett Reservoir. John’s parents
William and Letty came to Midhopestones
from Highgreen in 1945 when they were
tenants and initially took on around 100
acres before taking on a neighbouring farm.
John is married to Valerie and they have
twins Craig and his sister Lisa. Their elder
son Darren passed away some years ago.
William was in the butchery business
throughout his life at Stocksbridge and was
a regular buyer at both auction marts in
Otley, Bingley and Penistone.
Sheep were once part of Midhope Hall
Farm’s plans but have long since disap-
peared. The only other farming operation is
the growing of 45-50 acres of winter barley
and winter oats as well as grass for silage.
Craig’s girlfriend Danielle Taylor helps
on the farm and at shows and sales which
is just as well since Craig suffered recently
from an angle grinder blade breaking and
going straight through his tendon. Typically,
he was back working albeit on crutches
two days later. The show for this Simmental
man and ex rugby player must as they say
go on!’
