Yorkshire Foot Trimmers get bulls that will trample walls and fences just to get to cows which often results in lameness or getting wire stuck in hoofs. “Last February I was knocked over by a cow! We opened the gate and I slipped on a patch of ice, I shouted out but Robert just thought I was ready for the crush, then wham, a black Limousin ran over me pulling my sternum. It was very painful but now’t broke as they say. “In 2014 I was using a grinder, and when the farmer spoke to me I foolishly looked up and promptly took a chunk from my thumb. Thankfully I had it rebuilt in 2015 and it’s like new now. Just shows how careful you always have to be.” You’re telling me! And so to the future? “We would like to increase the trimming side, maybe get another crush but also increase the Highland herd,” Mandy said. “Also, I would like to educate the public much more about Highlands and what great animals they are - what superb quality and value they give and what a prime meat Highland beef is. After that we jumped into my car, went down the valley and up onto the roof of the barn to get a photo of them both atop a roof standing in the Queensbury sunshine. With a hard working pair such as Mandy and Robert and their clear affection for animals here is a another diverse farming business that can only flourish.
