string to their bows. So after
being involved in the farm
during all their time at school
they set out on their particular
paths.
Ben now takes full
responsibility for a contractual
farming arrangement on a large
local farm that has suckler cows
and sheep but is always on
hand to lend a hand at home.

John took a slightly different
path: after leaving school with
‘A’ levels he went to college to
acquire a trade. He persuaded
a local electrical contractor to
take him on trial which turned
into an apprenticeship and then
to full-time work - but then what
he really wanted was to divide
his working life between that
job and the farm. So he took
the bold step and went it alone
in 2010. Unfortunately, the part
time plan didn’t work out as he
became so busy by November
2011 he had to go full time. I
asked him why.
“I have all the qualifications
to enable me to do everything
from domestic to industrial
electrical work, and so was
one of the few electricians who
would genuinely work 24/7 and
respond quickly. There was a
genuine gap in the local market
place and my reputation for
reliability grew very quickly,” he
