Farmers that are not amongst
our membership tend to think
that all we major on are rent
issues. While we are always
concerned about them, they
only take up around 20 per
cent of our work. The rest of
the time we offer advice on any
kind of matter,” he explained.
“Up here in the north there
appears to be a lot more
pressure on tenant farmers.
I’m not saying that landlords
in the north are bad and in
the south they are better, it is
mixed everywhere. There are
areas where if a land agent
goes in and starts talking with
an individual tenant farmer
about a possible rent increase,
there is an immediate calling
together of all tenants to avoid
getting picked off one by one.
“I attended a meeting in
Cheshire recently where a
huge rent increase had been
proposed. It is not settled as
yet but the tenants are sticking
together and of course, the
TFA is there to help.
‘Only the TFA
concentrates
solely on tenant
farmers’
“But it is not always about
rent issues. The landlord may
wish to take land back for
amenity purposes, such as a
caravan site or other forms of
diversification. “The CLA looks
after landowners, the NFU
looks after both tenants and
