SWEET CORN & BABY CORN
By Doug McClymont
1. INTRODUCTION
Sweet Corn and Baby Corn can be grown for the local fresh market and for export. The criteria
used in the production differ slightly between markets and between varieties. Stage of harvest for
the market is very important and this should be researched and established well ahead of planting.
Both crops can be grown throughout the year and planting dates should be timed for when the
market or marketing contract requires.
2. CULTIVARS
The two recommended Baby Corn varieties are BC1 (206) and BC2 (SG18), while Golden Bantam,
Star 7711, Stowell’s Evergreen and Shimmer are the available Sweet corn varieties.
3. SEED
All seed should be seed treated with thiram at 20 g/10 kg seed; add to this an insecticide such as
imidacloprid (Gaucho®) at 10 g/10 kg seed.
