JUNIOR

E PLORERS

Hey, Junior Explorers! Ready to help nature thrive? A Bug Hotel is a cozy retreat for beneficial insects like ladybugs and bees. These tiny heroes pollinate our plants and keep gardens healthy. Let’ s build them a five-star stay!
GATHER YOUR GEAR
The Frame: A wooden crate, shoebox, or sturdy cardboard box.
The“ Suites”: Empty toilet paper rolls to create rooms and suites
The Bedding: Sticks, dried leaves, pinecones, hay, or straw.
Tools: String / twine, scissors, and optional glue.
LET’ S GET BUILDING!
Choose a Location: Find a sunny area in your garden that is sheltered from heavy rain.
Create the Frame: If using a box, you can glue cardboard dividers inside to create different“ rooms.”
Add the Rooms & Suites: Stack toilet paper rolls inside the frame to create organized tunnels for the bugs.
Layer It Up: Pack your natural materials( sticks, cones, and leaves) tightly into the rolls and gaps. Different textures attract different bugs!
Decorate & Secure: Use twine to keep everything snug. Feel free to paint the outside, decorate it with stones and flowers or add a“ Welcome” sign!
Grand Opening: Place your hotel in its permanent spot and make sure it’ s stable.
KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR BUGS!
Now that your bug hotel is ready, it’ s time for some exciting bug watching! Check on your hotel every few days. Keep your eyes peeled for different kinds of insects coming in and out. You may even want to keep a journal to note which bugs you see. This is a fantastic way to learn more about the roles they play in our environment.
WHY ARE BUGS IMPORTANT?
You might be wondering why we need to help bugs in the first place. Well, insects are incredible! They help pollinate flowers, which means we wouldn’ t have as many fruits and vegetables without them. Various insects naturally control pest populations, reducing the need for harmful chemicals. Building a bug hotel is a fantastic way for you to connect with nature and help protect our ecosystem. You’ re not just creating a home; you’ re helping out friends that are often
overlooked— those tiny but mighty bugs! So gather your friends and family, and get ready for a day full of creativity, exploration, and fun. Who knew bug hospitality would be so rewarding? Happy building!
