most noteworthy of which are THC and CBD . But consuming only one or the other ( e . g ., high THC strains with little or no CBD ) is seldom advisable . For example , as a Type-III chemotype , CBD ’ s effectiveness as an analgesic wanes the longer it ’ s used . In other words , CBD may work well for acute pain but not chronic pain . THC , as a Type-I chemotype , is far more effective for chronic pain . For neurological pain , it ’ s advised to use a Type-II chemotype , i . e ., a reasonable balance between THC and CBD .
When treating pain with cannabis ( or any medication ), moderation is a good practice . More is not always better and may , in fact , prove counterproductive . Take no more than is necessary to achieve the desired effect . Overconsumption runs the risk of the patient building a tolerance , thus requiring higher and higher dosing .
For fast-acting pain relief , smoking or vaping is advised . Sublingual tinctures require more time to take effect ( 20 or so minutes ) but are longer lasting . For even longer-lasting pain relief , edibles are the way to go , with the one negative being the challenge of getting the dose right due to their slow onset of an hour or so . Topical cannabis applications can also provide many hours of relief . Some patients ( myself included ) will find they combine , at various times , all of the above . Cannabis is dramatically safer than anything the medical establishment has to offer . So don ’ t be afraid to experiment .
