Off to the Market We Go !
A New Spin on Getting Your Fresh Groceries !
by Tara Holm , contributing writer
It ’ s summer ; the markets are open ! Not your typical grocery stores , but local farmer ’ s markets . As more people realize the adverse effects of government policies on our food and soil , we seek healthier options from organic farmers . The importance of local and organic produce is becoming clearer . While we can ’ t all grow our own food , local farmers are stepping up to share their crops and welcome us to enjoy their farm-fresh foods .
On a warm Saturday morning , I walked into the Brookside Farmers Market , where my senses were delighted by the aroma of freshly baked bread , homemade soaps , local honey , flavored sparkling waters , and freshly harvested veggies from rich farm soil .
Jon shared his story and passion for bringing the healthiest ingredients and fostering community . He envisions a brick-and-mortar bakery in the future , but for now , he sells his delicious baked goods at Brookside Farmers Market , which operates year-round .
The farmers at the Brookside Market are committed to environmental sustainability — growing , producing , and selling their goods within 100 miles of Kansas City ! Knowing these dedicated individuals care deeply about the origin and quality of their foods is truly refreshing . The farmers host annual visits for customers and community leaders to learn more about their farming practices .

The smell of freshly baked bread led me to Jonny Szajnuk , owner / baker at Jonny Bakes , www . jonnybakeskc . Set up on the corner , “ Jon ,” as he ’ s known , sells unique baked goods made from locally milled flour . His fresh bread offerings included Cranberry Loaf , Paprika and Garlic , Garden Herb and Sharp Cheddar , Country Loaf , and Honey Wheat . All Jonny Bakes products are vegetarian and free from preservatives and GMO ingredients . Just thinking about it makes your mouth water , right ? I left with a brown paper sack filled with freshly baked organic bread , my tummy growling with anticipation .
Across the aisle from Jon was the Wilkinson Garden Farm from Odessa , MO , showcasing ( photo above ) perfectly colored fresh carrots and radishes ! Talking with the vendors about their motivations and successes in the organic market emphasized the importance of knowing where our food comes from and what ’ s in it . Each vendor shared their organic farming expertise and enthusiasm for their journey , demonstrating how the community comes together for a greater cause –– healthy foods !
This new era of gardening and awareness reminds us that “ we ” are responsible for our well-being . Seek the truth , explore beyond the conventional store-bought options , and support local farmers
