Why Join?

One of the most attractive features of the Ethical movement is its welcoming attitude. The Ethical Society does not discriminate against anyone. It is an entirely open group with very progressive ideas. Although women were not allowed to join the Ethical Society until 1893, today anyone can join regardless of race, color, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, socioeconomic status, or religion.

The Society believes that everyone is equal and all humans are valuable and unique. Members strive to treat others in the way they wish others treated them.

Furthermore, the community is a judgment free zone.

“Our relationships bind us together in universal citizenship. This sense of mutuality leads us to a shared responsibility for the kind of world in which we live. Examining life through the prism of human experience, we see that we are capable of wonderful and inspiring things. We find that there is meaning in the potential for personal growth

and cultural transformation.” (American Ethical Union)

The emphasis within the community is on deeds, as their motto “deed before creed” suggests as well; therefore, moral responsibility is expected of everyone. There are no restrictions or prohibitions. One is welcome to do anything they want as long as they do not hurt others.
