WHAT OUR STUDENTS AND EMPLOYEES ARE TELLING US
Starfish
Starfish is NWTC ’ s primary student success system . At the heart of Starfish is a series of early alert messages meant to provide real-time feedback and direction to students that are experiencing struggles before these challenges lead to negative outcomes . Several types of early alert messages exist , with different intended uses :
• Flags are generally raised by faculty members and are meant to initiate a conversation between the student and faculty member to direct positive course performance .
What Our Incoming Students Tell Us
The New Student Intake Survey is administered to incoming students during orientation . Intake referrals are generated to relevant service areas for survey responses indicating a need or concern outside of academics . The figure below displays the proportion of each Intake Survey referral type raised for Students of Color ( SOC ) in 2020 . The red dashed line indicates the SOC portion of the NWTC student body in 2020 .
• Kudos are messages of encouragement and positive reinforcement .
• Referrals are messages that direct students to one of NWTC ’ s many services .
