Studies Abroad
British Studies at Oxford
By Nicole Mento
Around this time last year, I was preparing for what would be (not even
exaggerating) THE best summer of my entire life. A few months prior, I
found out about the British Studies at Oxford Program by going to a
study abroad fair held in the OC, not expecting to actually seriously con-
sider a trip.
After researching more about the program and how freaking cool it was,
I decided to apply, and I’m seriously glad I did.
Overall, my time in Oxford made me grow as a person, and it’s hard to
believe that any of the other classes I’ll take or experiences I’ll have in my
next few years of undergraduate schooling will be able to even come
close to comparing.
While studying at Oxford, I was enrolled in a tutorial style class—a class
centered on student-led discussion. Taking a class that is Oxford Tutorial
Style has the potential to be even more intimate and engaging than a tra-
ditional class at OU, and can be beneficial when it comes to other discus-
sions in various settings.
In the British Literature class I
took, much of our reading was
Oxford-related. For instance,
while discussing Chaucer and The
Canterbury Tales, our class went on
our own pilgrimage, which made
our discussion more interesting
and immersing. Studying at a
school with such an extensive
history and such prestige is truly
(excuse the cliché) a once in a
lifetime experience.
