An example of a repair achieved on a Mercedes 540 K cylinder block shows just what can be achieved to a badly damaged component that would normally have been considered a write-off and consigned to the scrap heap. The remaining elements of the original bores were drilled and threaded, and threaded liner inserts installed before reboring to the new specification

This is where Triple M plays its part, with the benefit of close associations with pattern shops and foundries and a comprehensive understanding of engine design and engineering. Specialising in the production of oneoffs or batches of engine and ancillary components and managing all aspects of the production process, working from drawings or an original component, it uses a combination of full CNC 4-axis machining facility, has a digitising facility and a full in-house design and reverse engineering capabilities. Using computerised scanning and 3D-modelling techniques to create AA drawings of all sorts of components, including bodywork, the end result is invariably even better documented than the original.
The workshop provides a wide range of machining services, with a large capacity 4-axis vertical mill which offers up to 1.6 metres of travel, as well as a

live tooling lathe, line boring machine, valve seat machine, Shadowgraph, CMM Machine and a variety of 3- 4- and 5-axis CNC and manual mills, lathes, grinders and a spark eroder, providing the capability to work in almost all materials including magnesium and plastics. All manufactured components are then subjected to a rigorous inspection process, with the aid of an Aberlink Axiom too CMM machine with an X, Y, Z measuring envelope of 640 mm x 1200 mm x 500 mm.
While creating brand-new parts is the ultimate option, it’ s always desirable to achieve a cost-effective repair to older parts wherever possible and the company has the capability to repair cast or forged items such as cylinder heads, cylinder blocks and other ancillary parts. In fact, JSWL is a distributor of Lock-N-Stitch supplies and offers a repair service for dealing with cracked and damaged components. It is even possible to stitch between the combustion chambers on a small cylinder head and bad cast-iron welding can be corrected with an almost invisible repair.
