RECOGNIZING DEDICATION : HONORING YOLANDA CAMARENA ' S ADVOCACY AND IMPACT
BY MARTA FLORES , WICHITA ALUMNAE CHAPTER
We are very excited to have inducted our Honorary Sister and wanted to share about her with the rest of the organization .
We had the pleasure , alongside the Alpha Alpha Chapter , to induct Yolanda Camarena as an Honorary Sister on October 14 , 2022 . Yolanda is been a mentor to our sisters since before we chartered in 2000 and continues to be an advocate in our Latino community . In the last few years , Yolanda and her husband , Gene , established the Shockers Adelante Scholars program at Wichita State University to help 20 students in underserved populations receive high-impact scholarships , provide mentoring and tutoring , and many other support measures to boost diversity on our campus and support higher education for students of color . This program also benefits one of our undocumented sisters at the Alpha Alpha Chapter by allowing her to complete nursing school by covering a majority of her tuition .
“ I enjoyed getting to know the current undergraduate sisters more and sharing some ideas on how to live our values after we graduate .“ - Melissa Conley , Wichita Alumnae Chapter President

“ It was so much fun getting to mingle with our younger sisters . It was an opportunity for me to meet newer members of my KDChi family tree and catch up with alumnae I haven ’ t seen in a while .” - Marta Flores , Wichita Alumnae Chapter Vice-President
