Yoel nodded and fell asleep in the awful bed.
Saul took of his coat and put it around his son so he
wouldn’t be too cold. The hut wasn’t exactly a very nice
place. It was cold, grey and there were no windows or
lamps. And it was crowded with men who looked at each
other confused. The man who Saul asked what the guard
had said stepped forward. Before he started speaking, he
made sure Yoel was asleep.
The guards said that they will be back soon, he said. Then
we will get clothes and after that we all need to follow
them to get new haircuts. After that we will go to work,
and if you don’t follow their orders, you will be punished.
After a while the guards came back and handed out dirty,
striped pants and shirts. When everyone had put the
clothes on, they followed the guards out in the rain. They
came into a big building where there were other people.
These people didn’t have any hair left on their heads. Yoel
was confused, but he thought that it was just a test to see
who was brave enough to get their hair cut of. Yoel was
absolutely brave enough for that, he didn’t even like his
brown, curly hair.
Come here little boy!, an old man in a white coat
said to Yoel. He held a pair of scissors in his hand.
