Saul walked up to the guards and tried to look strict. He didn’ t speak German, but he had a great idea how he could make Yoel believe this was a competition. The guard shouted a long sentence and Saul looked at Yoel who was sitting all alone in the bed. The guard became quiet and looked at Saul, wanting him to translate.
Welcome to the competition!, Saul said with a loud voice. This is the competition about who the bravest person in the world is! I am the boss and you will have to do exactly what I tell you to do! You’ re going to sleep in these beds every night and if you manage to do it, you can stay in the competition. If not, you’ re out!
The guard started shouting again. Once he stopped, Saul took over.
If you cry once, you get a warning! The next time you cry, you are out!, Saul became quiet and looked at his son again. Yoel was doing his“ strict man face” that he did when he wanted to look old and mature. It looked like he believed that this actually was a competition.
The guards turned around walked out of the hut. All the men looked at each other, confused about what Saul had said. Papa, I’ m hungry, Yoel said. Do you have any food?
No, my son. But it’ s a part of the competition, no food for a long time is a sign that you’ re a very brave man, Saul answered his son. Maybe you can try to sleep? That’ s alright unless the men in the uniforms don’ t see.
