Yoel stood behind the man with the scar and in front of Saul. The shouting men directed Eliyahu to the left and Yoel and Saul to the right. But Papa! Where is the man with the scar going?, Yoel shouted. Sschhh! You’re gonna lose the competition if you get upset when you get separated from anyone, Saul whispered. When will they tell us the other rules of the competition?, Yoel asked his father with a quiet voice. I’m not so sure, but now we need to follow all these other people. You have to walk fast so you can show the scary men how quick, strong and good you are. Let’s go! Yoel held his father’s hand while walking with a crowd full of other men who looked like they were the same age as his father. The men in the uniforms lead them to a small hut with plenty of bunk beds which looked very uncomfortable. Saul put his little son in one of the beds and patted him on his small head. All the other men in the hut looked at them with tired, frightened eyes. He heard the door slam open and everyone turned around to see three, big guards in uniforms stepping into the hut. One of them shouted something in a language that Saul believed was German. He turned around and asked a man in the hut what the guard had said. He’s asking someone to step forward and translate what he’s saying to English, the man whispered. e Twinning 2016 82
