Saul walked up to the guards and tried to look strict . He didn ’ t speak German , but he had a great idea how he could make Yoel believe this was a competition . The guard shouted a long sentence and Saul looked at Yoel who was sitting all alone in the bed . The guard became quiet and looked at Saul , wanting him to translate .
Welcome to the competition !, Saul said with a loud voice . This is the competition about who the bravest person in the world is ! I am the boss and you will have to do exactly what I tell you to do ! You ’ re going to sleep in these beds every night and if you manage to do it , you can stay in the competition . If not , you ’ re out !
The guard started shouting again . Once he stopped , Saul took over .
If you cry once , you get a warning ! The next time you cry , you are out !, Saul became quiet and looked at his son again . Yoel was doing his “ strict man face ” that he did when he wanted to look old and mature . It looked like he believed that this actually was a competition .
The guards turned around walked out of the hut . All the men looked at each other , confused about what Saul had said . Papa , I ’ m hungry , Yoel said . Do you have any food ?
No , my son . But it ’ s a part of the competition , no food for a long time is a sign that you ’ re a very brave man , Saul answered his son . Maybe you can try to sleep ? That ’ s alright unless the men in the uniforms don ’ t see .
