He had a bullet hole right through his forehead. Another
brother had fallen, a meaningful one..
Some of me died in that battle, some of me didn’t. This
was a battle that I would remember forever.
OUR 2nd STORY:
The journey
The year was 1935 I had just turned sixteen, and
had the eagerness to explore the world boiling inside of
me. I had my whole life in front of me, or at least that was
what I thought. But 1935 things changed, because it was
the same year as Hitler initiated compulsory military
service in Germany. Therefore I was now on my way, not
sure of where to, but I guess I’d soon find out.
Right now I could feel the worn out train
bumping against the new railway. I could see dark green
caps of men, just like mine, swaying from side to side
when the train made its turns. Since it was in the middle
of the night most “soldiers to be” were sleeping in their
seats, but I was not one of them. I couldn’t sleep, since I
couldn’t stop thinking about leaving my family behind. I
still remember the day when the long letter arrived,
saying that I had to join the army.
