Their eyes were sunken and bloodshot and full of
despair. Eliyahu and the others that had come with him,
settled down where they could find space. He found a
piece of empty floor and carefully laid his sleeping bag
on the damp floor. Nobody spoke, but he saw others
looking at him in envy, and he realizes almost everyone
else sat directly on the muddy floor. There was a little
fuss over the sleeping places, but soon silence fell over
the dark room.. He closed his eyes and tried to block out
the smell and the thoughts in his head. Eliyahu tried to
not think about the future, nor the past. Instead he
focused on the heavy rain pattering on the roof.
Eliyahu thought it couldn’t get any worse, but on the
following day he understood how wrong he was. It
could get a lot worse. He, and a group of other men
were set to work, after a breakfast containing only a few
bread crumbs and a watery soup. The work was heavy
and they weren’t allowed breaks
The guards were constantly watching them
and shouting commands and insults at random. They
had to dig an enormous hole and then dump heavy
black things, covered in flies, into the hole. Suddenly he
realized what the things were. It was burned, blackened
bodies. Human bodies, that they were disposing in a
mass grave. Horrified, Eliyahu dropped the body he was
carrying.
