THOUGHT FOR YOUR SOUL I have nothing to give you but this letter. A letter that has defined my life as a post-man. Son, Let me unwind before you the lesson that life imparted to me. Son, I’ve had rendezvous with failures more than success in my life but the zeal and zest to wake up and see the light of another day never deserted me and I hope you inculcate the same. Every moment of life is like a text- book on its own. You should know my son, life at times can be like the waves of oceans with crests and troughs. Fall you may, but surf your way to the shore. For, the waves are only as strong as your determination. Let it not deter. Wade your way through the troubled waters and you shall behold the serenity the sea of life has to offer. And whenever darkness shall descend upon, let it not intimidate you. Be a beacon yourself, for the hour is the darkest just before the dawn. Be the shining light for the forlorn. And if ever you feel forsaken, you shall always your dad by your side. An old tree might not be fertile enough to bear fruit but spare it for the silhouette in the scorch of summer. My years of refuge are hasting away and soon I shall lie as low as the dust. On the pyre, when I’m consummated let me be THE DREAM BOX remembered by the principles I lived by. My son, let you be known by who you are and not by where you belong to. For all the memories we’ve made, treasure it as a souvenir from your dad. Lovingly yours, Dad” By the time he read the last word, his eyes had brimmed up with tears. The sobbing was inconsolable. They say, there’s no better ointment than time. Soon he found himself on the dais with the MBBS degree in his hands. He had everything today, yet his eyes looked vacant. He missed his Dad. With misty eyes, he looked heavenwards and with a lumpy throat he whispered, “Dad, this is for you. This is for all the sacrifices you made to make me not just a good doctor but a better human being. I’ll try my best to ingrain the values and the principles that define d you.” He sat down holding the degree in his hands staring at the horizon, unfazed by the indistinct chatters around him. He closed his eyes and filled his lungs with air of gratification and let a sigh. After all, life is a theatre and we all are characters. 9
