The Most Rev . Frank Dewane , Bishop of the Diocese of Venice , will preside at the Mass . Lawyers , judges , and all who serve in the administration of justice , their families , and staff , including law enforcement officers , and law students are invited to participate .
The first recorded Red Mass was held in the Cathedral of Paris in 1245 . The popular name Red Mass is drawn from the red vestments worn by clergy and judges in the royal courts of Europe .
The Red Mass is held annually in Washington , DC at the beginning of the term of the U . S . Supreme Court . In Florida , the Red Mass is held in Tallahassee before each legislative session opens .
