up in the Doctor ’ s ER on a Sunday between 1995 and 2010 , you probably met her . She volunteered right up until the day she was told her cancer had metastasized . Following my grandmother ’ s example , I , and my father before me , have served on several boards and taken pro bono cases from Legal Aid of Manasota . We ’ ve also served the SCBA . Truly , I don ’ t believe either of us would have served as president of this great Bar Association if not for my grandmother ’ s example . She was very humble and would not have taken an iota of credit for the success of her children and grandchildren but I firmly believe that we are all products of her example .
I hope you don ’ t read this article and think I ’ m just bragging about my family , though maybe I am just a little . I hope , instead , that you will take a moment to think about the legacy you are creating . What example are you passing along to your children and to the younger attorneys in your firm ? Are you inspiring your colleagues to work hard and earn a living but to also include service as part of their lives ? With our educations and experience , we all have so much that we can give back , whether it is to Legal Aid of Manasota or as a member of a service organization like Kiwanis ( to which I belong ) or Rotary or as a board member of an organization with a mission near and dear to us . If you haven ’ t been able to tell through my columns thus far , encouraging our members to give back is a central theme of this year and will be for my president-elect , Neil Lyons , next year . Neil and I are always available to any members who want to talk about ways to serve , so please don ’ t hesitate to reach out . �
