THE SACRIFICE OF LOVE:
DOWNSIZING
TO CARE FOR AGING PARENTS
By: Malinda Phelps, Realtor
Sacrifice is a word we often associate with hardship, but in God’ s eyes, it is an act of love. Life is full of seasons. Some bring challenges that stretch our faith and reshape our understanding of sacrifice. One of the hardest yet most rewarding transitions can be downsizing our own lives to care for aging parents. I know this journey well because I’ ve walked it myself— and I’ m still walking it. It’ s more than sorting belongings or selling a home. It’ s about changing priorities, letting go of the past, and trusting the journey ahead.
The Call to Honor
When my parents needed help, I decided to downsize both our homes. This way, we could live together. It wasn’ t an easy process. Letting go of things can be hard. This includes memories linked to a home and a feeling of independence. At times, it all felt too much. In all of this, I held onto one truth:“ Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you”( Exodus 20:12). Caring for our parents is not just a duty— it’ s a way to love them well in their final years.
Letting Go to Gain More
Downsizing is more than just sorting through belongings; it’ s a shift in mindset. It ' s tough to see our parents face the thought of leaving a home they ' ve known for years. It was also hard for me to leave my own. Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:19-20 to focus on heavenly treasures, not on earthly things. Letting go of things doesn’ t mean letting go of love or memories— it means making space for what truly matters.
Practical Tips for Those Facing This Transition If you’ re in this season, here are a few things I’ ve learned:
1. Give Yourself Grace. Downsizing is an emotional process. There will be days of frustration and sadness, but also moments of peace. It’ s okay to feel both.
2. Start Small. Focus on one room or one category at a time. Sorting through a lifetime of belongings can feel impossible if you try to tackle it all at once.
3. Let Your Parents Have a Say. Even if the move is needed, involving them in the decision helps them feel in control.
4. Lean on Faith and Community. Pray for wisdom and strength. Seek encouragement from others who have been through it. You don’ t have to do this alone.
5. Remember the Why. When the process feels overwhelming, remind yourself of the love behind your sacrifice. This isn’ t just about moving— it’ s about honoring and caring for the ones who raised you.

Sacrifice isn’ t easy, but it is holy. God sees every unseen act of service. The late nights, the tough decisions, the moments of exhaustion— He is in all of it. Through this journey, I’ ve seen God provide in ways I never expected. If you’ re facing this season, know that you are not alone. It may be hard, but it is worth it. Trust that the love you pour out now will be a blessing for years to come. Hold tight to His promises. Lean on His strength. And remember— you are honoring God as you honor your parents.
