Dr. Evelyn Braxton, affectionately known as Ms. E, has been a guiding force in her family’ s life and a source of inspiration for many. In this interview, she shares insights into her experiences as a mother, her values, and her current endeavors.
DZ: Dr. Braxton, The DIVA Zone Family was elated to hear of your acceptance of our offer for you to grace the cover of our May 2025 Issue honoring Black Mothers. Braxton Family Values has become a household staple in our community, and your presence on the show is edifying to women and to our culture. We adore you! Can you share with the DZ audience what it was like raising your daughters when they were younger? Were you strict?
EB: Thank you so much for your kind words and for having me. Raising my daughters was both a joy and a challenge. I believed in instilling strong values, discipline, and the importance of faith. While I wouldn’ t describe myself as overly strict, I did set clear boundaries and expectations. It was essential for me to guide them with love and ensure they understood the significance of respect, hard work, and integrity.

Mental health support is a sign of strength and self-care.

DZ: Do you encourage therapy? How important is it to Black women?
DZ: It is evident that your adult daughters reverence you in such a remarkable way that has sadly seemed to be a thing of the past in our communities today. Please share why you believe your daughters display that level of honor still today.
EB: I believe that the foundation of mutual respect and open communication we established early on has played a significant role. By being present, listening to their concerns, and sharing my own experiences, we built a bond of trust and understanding. This connection has allowed us to maintain a deep respect for one another throughout the years.
DZ: How has your upbringing influenced your mothering style?
EB: My upbringing in South Carolina was rooted in strong family values and faith. My parents emphasized the importance of community, compassion, and resilience. These principles became the cornerstone of my parenting approach, guiding me to raise my children with a sense of purpose and a deep connection to our heritage.
EB: Absolutely. Therapy can be a vital tool for healing and self-discovery. For Black women, who often face unique societal pressures and challenges, having a safe space to express and process emotions is crucial. Embracing mental health support is a sign of strength and self-care.
