Wapiti Ever and Nevermore peace that had slipped away, and its minimalism forced me to reconnect with myself and nature. I sensed the strength and perseverance in what can be a desolate and lonely environment. My images portray solitary strength and serenity in a world that continues to race by us. For the first time in years, I was the only one behind my camera; the solitude and peace had silenced the ever-present nagging thought, “Will it sell?” Ellie I took this experience and knowledge home with me and started focusing on what really matters to me. I took the time to pause, breathe and feel as I had in Mojave, and found that what I really loved more than anything was bringing a voice to the voiceless. Whether it was images of the environment or images of animals, I knew I wanted to be an advocate for them. I believe if a person has a positive connection with something, they will have a vested emotional interest and want to protect it. With my latest collection, Breath.Spirit.Life., I have found myself following that same thought process. Through bold, minimalistic images of animals that portray solitary strength, it is my goal to foster that connection between my subject and the viewer. I want people to look into the eyes of these innocent beings and feel something profound; something that awakens their compassion for other living things. As A.D. Williams stated, “When I look into the eyes of an animal, I do not see an animal. I see a living being. I see a friend. I see a soul.” With my original art, I hope that viewers will see more than a stranger, more than a nuisance, more than a commodity. I try and capture the grace, the spirit and the personality of each animal I have had the honor of meeting. I hope I do them justice! New Mexico True May/Jun 2018 | THE DESERT LIGHT 15
