I had an idea … by Kim Moody
But it didn’ t turn out the way I planned. It all started OK. Black gesso, dirtied up with Quinacridone Gold, Transparent Yellow Iron Oxide, Burnt Umber, English Red Oxide, and sealed with Matte Medium.
I continued.
Once dry I applied Crackle Paint, but to add a little je ne sais qua I dipped the loaded brush into Quin Gold. Very nice. This is where things went astray. I ended up with a flower. Oh, well. Hope you like it.
* * * What I had planned was a sort of dark, steampunk, industrial look. Sort of tough and macho, but it didn’ t happen.
Once the crackle paint had dried I base coated the area of the flower and leaf in white gesso. This covered the crackle and gave me a smooth-ish area to paint on.
By now I had decided I was going to use some of the transparent DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics and blend the colours.
I base-coated the petals with Transparent Yellow Iron Oxide, and pulled out the centres with Primary Magenta. I used the same colours on the leaves, with the addition of Green Gold. To add a slight highlight I added a little Hansa Yellow Light.
Shadows are a wash of Paynes Grey, outlining and lettering in Burnt Umber( not transparent). I added a vignette of dry brushed Burnt Umber to the edges to finish.
