“ It ’ s true ,” he continued . “ I don ’ t think I ’ ve met anyone who wants to die as badly as you do . It ’ s fascinating .”
James narrowed her eyes . “ But I ’ m sure …” She bit her lip , thinking . “ I mean , there must have been others that –” “ Want eternal life ?” He raised an eyebrow . “ Of course .” “ You would be the first .” “ Oh .” James breathed . She was warmer now , shroud in his jacket . But somehow , the hairs on the back of her neck still stood at attention . She looked at him . “ You ’ ve never turned anyone .”
The Vampire ’ s eyes darkened . His lip twitched . “ No ,” he said , his voice low and rumbly . Almost like a growl .
James stood up straight . She understood now . She had the upper hand . It was intoxicating , this sense of power . The Vampire wasn ’ t toying with her at all . He didn ’ t even know how to do what she was asking him to . Or at least , he ’ d never tried it before .
“ Haven ’ t you always wondered ,” James stepped forward , attempting to close the distance between them , “ what it would be like to give someone that gift ?”
The Vampire watched her intently , his eyes roaming her body – searching her eyes . Had he ever been this close to a human before ? One that he wasn ’ t going to kill , at least . Of that part , she wasn ’ t certain . He could kill her pretty easily . But her desire to die , to be reborn again with eternal life , was far greater than her fear . She pushed through .
