“ Oh God , I hope they weren ’ t alive when he chopped them up ,” said Knives in a low voice . “ That would have been an awful , bloody way to die .” Her face scrunched up and she whispered , “ Oh God , Nikki . Please God , don ’ t let her have died that way .”
“ I-I didn ’ t see any blood ,” Lita mentioned . “ On the body parts , I mean . N-Not a drop .” “ Are you sure ?” “ I-I think so .” Grey stood , curious despite himself . Slowly , he returned to the plastic bin and bent down to get a closer look . After retching again , he returned to the stairs . “ No blood ,” he confirmed . “ Not a drop anywhere .”
“ Then where is it all ?” Knives asked . “ Blood just doesn ’ t disappear .”
“ I have no idea ,” Grey replied . “ But can we get out of here ? I can ’ t spend another second down here .” “ Good idea ,” Lita said . They ascended the stairs , moving as quickly and as
quietly as possible . They paused at the door and , hearing nothing beyond , pushed it open and stepped upstairs .
They found themselves in what appeared to be an ordinary suburban house . In front of them was a kitchen , while to the right was a living room with an office computer set up against one wall . To the left was a door with a lock on the knob . Knives went to the door and jiggled the doorknob .
“ Knew it ,” she said . “ We need a key to open this door . I ’ d ask who the fuck puts a lock on the inside of a door like this , but we already know .”
