Tank’s Rant: Oh, Harvey!
Once again, Mother Nature
has raised her angry fist at the
United States, and of all the
places that didn’t need another
shot in the arm, she decided on
the Gulf Coast. My thoughts and
prayers go out to all the people
affected by this mess.
Every natural disaster, big and
small, seems to bring out the
best and the worst in people
and Harvey is going to be no
exception. I’ve seen neighbors
helping neighbors while the scum
of the earth has already started
to loot. If you’re going to donate
to the cause, please make
sure the charity is a reputable
one and watch out for the
Facebook/social media scams.
I got to give a shout out to
all the volunteers and first
responders down there doing
what they do. From the Coast
Guard (Puddle Pirates) who
are really in their element here
to the National Guard and the
“Cajon” Navy, to the hundreds
of regular citizens who brought
their boats in. Great to see
people helping people. Please
be sure to thank the Linemen,
they come from near and far
and are some of the first to
get into the area and restore
power. This storm has a huge
physical scope and as I write
this article all I see is Houston,
Houston, Houston. I sure hope
there are enough assets on the
ground to help the people down
where Harvey made land fall
and that they don’t get pushed
to the back because a major
metropolitan area is being
ravished. Rockport is a small
town, but took the brunt of the
storm right on the chin.
I have figured out that no
matter how much you warn some
people, there are always going
to be the ones that are just too
dumb to heed the warnings. I
was discussing this in a group
of people there other day and
was informed that I just don’t
“understand”. Well folks, I may
not totally understand every
aspect of every storm, but I do
have a pretty healthy respect
for nature and her fury. I have
lived thru some of the best she
can throw at you: Hurricane Iwa
in Hawaii, the Joplin tornado,
earthquakes in both Southern
and Northern California,
typhoons in the Pacific, flooding
here at home and countless
numbers of tornados and
blizzards. I have a pretty good
understanding that when the
National Weather Service or
your local emergency people
tell you to evacuate/take
cover, you probably should do
what you’re told and yet……
I see it over and over again,
people saying “I didn’t think
it would be this bad”. Anyone
remember Katrina? It was just
12 years ago. I saw one lady
in Rockport that when asked
why she didn’t leave, she said
she couldn’t afford it. Um, there
were FREE buses arranged to
take you to free shelters. Makes
me wonder if there may have
been a warrant or maybe an
immigration issue or something
like that? Just saying. I thought
free was trendy now? Take what
you can and not have to pay
for it. Free transportation and
free shelter with free food; sure
sounds like a win-win to me,
and it beats sitting in a house
wondering if you’re going to
blow away or be swallowed up
by the sea. I’m sure there was
a reason to keep her and her
children there.

As far as social media goes, how
about researching stuff before
you just click ‘share’? I loved the
picture from Hobby Airport that
shows the tails of the planes
sticking out of water. Did you
know the tail height on a Boeing
777 is just over 60 feet? When
people share that crap, it can
seriously mess with people who
have loved ones in the area.
Don’t spread fake news.
It’s not pretty and it’s going
to take a while, but they will
recover and life will get back to
normal somehow, some way. See
if maybe you can help to make
the Gulf Coast Great Again!
