The frenetic energy of four brothers from Decatur, Ga.

Hero the Band, an eclectic quartet out of Decatur, Ga., took the stage in colorful neo-Hendrix garb and immediately launched into a high energy set that deserved far more attention than the audience at The Loft offered. The drumming provided alternatively a vigorous backdrop and impressionistic canvass upon which the more restrained yet articulate guitarist and keyboardist could work. Throughout, the bass player occupied what seemed to be a huge space on the small stage, exuding the energy the band promised to deliver in our pre show interview. All four brothers added to the vocal patchwork, evincing a skill in harmony that they have cultivated since youth. Their mother, Jassandra, explained that the brothers come from a musical family. While they grew up in the church absorbing gospel music, their early influences were diverse. Jassandra remembers the boys performing Elton John songs from “The Lion King” for the family. The brothers admitted a wide range of influences as well, from Queen to Lenny Kravitz. The result on stage is a sound with wide ranging appeal, and I wonder if the band would have been better served by a younger, more open audience, the sort often found at another Broadway bar, The Fox Hole.
