With the recent controversy surrounding the United States course of action concerning the ongoing Syrian civil war and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s alleged use of chemical weapons, the Saber asked students for their opinion. While asking for opinions, the Saber came across quite a few students who were not knowledgeable of the Syrian controversy. For all those who fall into this category, here is a brief summary.

“We have an obligation to be there, but it seems we should stay out of it especially since we don’t have the best relationship with Russia.” – Ricky Biancardi, geology major

“I believe we should take care of our own affairs.” – Briana Wiley, criminal justice major
“Honestly I don’t believe we should be involved because with Russia defending Syria and our relations with Syria is shaky at best.” – Justin Lewis, psychology major
In April 2011, peaceful protests against the Syrian dictatorship arose following the revolution in Egypt. The Syrian government responded by killing civilians in an attempt to quell the protest movement. Civilians retaliated by attacking the army and forming rebel militias. The Syrian civil war has been ongoing for two years. Recently, information about Syrian President Bashar al-Assad allegedly using chemical attacks on civilians has surfaced.
