Francis Brooke III, who as president of Columbus College from 19801987 oversaw a $6 million capital campaign among other accomplishments, passed away Saturday July 20 in Richmond, Va. at the age of 84. Although his tenure as college president ended after a faculty vote of no confidence, Brooke, second CSU president, faced challenges including a drop in college enrollment and shrinking state budgets. In addition to navigating these challenges, Brooke’s $6 million capital campaign was the school’s first and was, at the time, the largest private fundraising effort in Columbus history. Brooke is also credited with reorganizing the college’s administrative structure, introducing new standards for faculty research and with hiring more black faculty and staff. Brooke transformed what began as a two-year institution into a school that could finally begin to come into it’s own as a four year institution, having graduated it’s first four year class in 1970.

Month of events to kick off a new school year
From August 10 to 24, CSU and various sponsors will host a variety of events for the faculty and student body to enjoy in celebration of the 2013-2014 school year. Cougar Kick-Off will include on- and off-campus events. Like previous years, the Ask Me Tent, Bike Ride with Dr. Mescon and Day of Service will all be included. The Comedy Show, Field Day and Whitewater Rafting are new activities that the student body can look forward to. Students without transportation need not fret over securing a ride for an off-campus event. The school will provide transportation to Hollywood Connections, Whitewater Rafting and the Callaway Beach Bash. Students should be sure to check daily for an event so as to not miss out on any fun. Also, arrive on time to get free t-shirts and food before they run out. Transportation times and registration for the Day of Service are located at www.columbusstate.
