Teams Announced for 2015 Julius Boros Challenge Cup
Team captains Jack Bracken (CSGA) and Dennis
Coscina (CT PGA) have announced their teams for the
Julius Boros Challenge Cup, an annual gathering of the
state’s top amateur and professional golfers which will
take place on Thursday, May 7th at New Haven Country
Club in Hamden, Conn. This year marks the 44th
anniversary of the matches, which first began in 1972
at Tumble Brook Country Club and has since become
an annual showcase of Connecticut Section PGA
Professionals against amateurs from the Connecticut
State Golf Association in a match play format.
Each team consists of fourteen players, who
earned their way onto their respective teams through
their accomplishments in the previous season. The
CSGA enters the competition with a wealth of
experience highlighted by six-time Senior Player of
the Year Dave Szewczul. The team also features a trio
of 2014 champions in Glen Boggini (Public Links),
Kevin Foster (Mid-Amateur) and Jim Romaniello (New
England Senior Amateur), as well as 2014 Connecticut
Amateur Runner-Up Kevin Josephson.
For the CSGA team, 2015 marks an opportunity
to break a streak of three consecutive losses. Incoming
team captain Jack Bracken, the 2013 Senior Amateur
Champion who takes over for Dr. Bob Ruby, hopes
that this year’s team
will be able to break
the streak.
“This is the
first year in a while that
we have some players
that are recent college
graduates, so I believe that will definitely make our team
stronger from top to bottom”, said Bracken. “My plan
is to try to team up players that have played together in
the past, either as individuals or as team members in a
four-ball event. I think we have a great compliment of
youth and experience on our team and I think we will
be able to hold our own against the professionals.”
Connecticut PGA Captain Dennis Coscina
is a Challenge Cup veteran, having perhaps the most
impressive playing record in Connecticut Section PGA
history. Coscina won a total of eight Connecticut PGA
Championships and six Section Player of the Year
titles, and played in a total of fourteen Challenge Cup
Matches. This will be the fifth year that Coscina has
captained the Connecticut PGA squad, and hi
