12th Russell C. Palmer Cup T May 18th - 19th, 2015 he 12th Russell C. Palmer Cup will return to the Country Club of Waterbury for the seventh time in tournament history. Named for Connecticut Golf Hall of Fame Member and Former CSGA Executive Director (1986-95), the Palmer Cup is considered the CSGA’s stroke play championship. The competition is one of strength and endurance, contested over 54-holes in two consecutive days (18-holes on Monday, 36-hole on Tuesday). Having previously hosted the Palmer Cup on six other occasions (2006, 2007, 2008, 2012, 2013 and 2014), in addition to ten Connecticut Amateur Championships and the 2005 Connecticut Open, the CC of Waterbury has a proven history of testing the state’s top amateur golfers. The CC of Waterbury was originally founded in 1899 with a nine hole course constructed by Waterbury, Conn. Native Arthur Fenn. It was one of thirteen founding members of the League of Connecticut Golf Clubs, which would later grow to become the Connecticut State Golf Association. In 1927, the club hired noted golf architect Donald Ross to develop a firstclass 18-hole layout on a combination of existing and newly acquired land. The new Ross course opened for play on Saturday, September 15, 1928, and has become a cornerstone for the tradition of the club. The present layout of a par 69 (3534) is one of the few remaining courses with a single par-5 (Hole #9) and many of its holes are annually featured among Connecticut’s top holes in the state. Holes like the 405 yard par-4 10th (pictured here) require a precise tee shot to avoid the fescue and thick rough, leaving a demanding approach to an elevated green. The Country Club of Waterbury most recently hosted the 2014 Russell C. Palmer Cup, where Blake Morris shot rounds of 76-67-68-211 (+4) and defeated Monte Mullen and John Flaherty, both of TPC River Highlands, on the third playoff hole to capture his first CSGA major championship on his home course. » Click here for complete coverage www.csgalinks.org CSGA Links // May, 2015 | 15
