I am writing concerning the need for funding at the Coshocton Career Center . I think it is extremely disappointing to see 350 students enrolled at the career center but only funding for 200 ( according to an Aug . 12 Beacon article ).
I have always been a proponent for vocational education . Where else can a student attend high school and come out with the skills to acquire a career with an opportunity for lifelong success ? Students are free of debt and ready for the demanding work force .
Both my son and daughter are products of the career center , and both have successful jobs in their field without having to attend college . That means foregoing four years of training and not being saddled with $ 30,000 or more in student loan debt . Also , college is not always the right fit for many young adults . Many young people want a hands-on job . They aren ’ t able to master the advanced math or science needed for some degrees . They want

Letter to the Editor

to get a job right out of high school , but without this type of vocational training , their choices and opportunities will be extremely limited .
I teach at C-TEC , the vocational school in Licking County . We offer early work release and work / study where students go to school for one week and work at their vocation for the next week . Students are not only learning the skill of their trade , but also they are able to work and make money while in high school .
For many years and even today , many people think the vocational school is for “ bad kids .” There is nothing further from the truth . Vocational training is for the student that wants to get ahead now . They are hands-on , want to learn what employers are looking for and want to have a career doing something they enjoy .
But don ’ t think vocational students can ’ t still go on to college . Here at C-TEC , some students are taking physics and chemistry , working on college classes in the FACTS Lab , and preparing to go on for further education . The fields are varied and needed : clinical care , dental , medical assisting , welding , automotive , diesel mechanics , electrical trades , electronics , fire tech , criminal justice , cosmetology , architecture and engineering designs , construction and more .
In case you missed going to a vocational school during high school , we offer many of the same programs including lineman training , heating and cooling , medical coding , phlebotomy , massage therapy — so many choices for training that is so needed in today ’ s society .
Depending on your income , sometimes this training can be free . Working with the local industry vocational schools paves the way from school to work .
So when I see our own vocational school begging for funds and more i mpor t a ntly t u r n i ng away students , it breaks my heart . Vocational school training has been our past , and it ’ s going to be so important in the future for training our young people to fill the needs in our community . Please support your community ’ s young people and your community . Support the Coshocton Career Center and vocational training .
