Fresno UMC celebrated annual Rural Life Sunday

Fresno United Methodist Church celebrated Rural Life Sunday on Sept . 8 , inviting members to drive their tractors , farm implements or antique autos to church . The day ’ s activities also included a covered dish meal , mini tractor pulls and a hayride .
“ This is such a special Sunday . The community comes , and it takes a lot of effort to decorate and put the service together , but I love the fact that the kids and adults want to be a part of the worship service ,” Pastor Dan Eggan said . “ We decided to honor a farmer ’ s wife this year . The wives are right in there with their husbands , and the farm ’ s not going to operate without them .

Mary have been a part of this church forever and ever . They have a dairy farm , so we thought we would recognize , as Fresno Farm Wife of the Year , Mary Edith Powell . Mary has been a member of the church for 69 years . She is a devoted Christian , very kind and compassionate .”
Mary Powell was completely surprised by the honor . “ I was dumbfounded . I was wondering who the farmer would be , and I never dreamed it would be the farmer ’ s wife . I joined the church in 1958 , and my husband John is a 78- year member ,” she said .
The Powells have three children , nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren . Her family members were at the event as well .

Fresno United Methodist Church 50-year members were honored at Rural Life Sunday including Tim Shroyer , Carol Greten , Peggy Stevens , John Powell , Mary Edith Powell , Lori Gress , Linda Todd Mendenhall , Richard Reidenbach and Brent Haynes . John Powell had the most years of all with a total of 78 years .
