River View set to host marching band invitational

The River View High School Marching Black Bears will host 10 bands on Saturday , Oct . 15 during their annual invitational at their football field .
The national anthem will be played at 10:50 a . m ., and the bands will start performing at 11 a . m . Admission is $ 6 for adults and $ 4 for senior citizens and students age 5-18 . Ages 4 and under will be admitted free . Programs of the day are included in the cost of admission .
Senior drum major Bobbi Rahn said they strive to do their best at every competition but especially look forward to their home invitational .
“ Everyone is waiting to hear you perform , and all eyes are on us ,” she said .

Clarinet player and fellow senior Rebekah Unkefer agreed with Rahn .
“ There are so many people there to support the band ,” Unkefer said . “ You feel the home support .”
Senior trombone player Jesse Shoemaker said the bigger crowd is fun to perform in front of , and it ’ s also nice to see the other bands .
No matter where they compete , everyone enjoys the opportunity to showcase their skills .
“ Competitions are fun ,” Unkefer said . “ They are just about the band and are our moment to shine .”

The Marching Black Bears , however , do much more than just compete at their home event .
“ We run it ,” senior flute player Kiera McPeck said . “ If you don ’ t like something , you can fix it and make it , so everyone enjoys it .”
There also is a lot to learn from the event .
Senior color guard member Saylor Starkey said they aren ’ t just there to perform . They also are there to help prepare everyone .
“ We take the bands to their warm-up areas ,” senior tuba player Sheldon Stotts said . “ You get to see how the other bands operate .”
Senior Grace Cullison , who is a member of the front ensemble , said , “ We are very involved . We host the other bands , run the water station and help keep everything cleaned up .”

None of the hard work would be fun without their fellow band mates .
“ I like being around everybody and trying to get that one to go to state ,” senior saxophone player Alex Courtright said .
Bands from the following schools are scheduled to perform at the invitational : Cambridge , Coshocton , Crooksville , Olentangy Liberty , Thomas Worthington , Westerville South , Meigs , New Philadelphia , Ridgewood , Union Local and River View .
